About Simona Cristescu

I hold a Ph.D. in physics (Magna cum laude) from In 2003 I started my own research line on laser-based spectroscopy for biomarkers research in the Trace Gas Research group at IMM, RU. Since then, I perform research on biomarkers with focus on volatile compounds in exhaled breath and/or produced by microorganisms (i.e. breathomics) with relevance for clinical applications, like diagnosis and treatment monitoring. I am interested to understand the biochemical processes involved in disease and monitor the disease activity for improving treatment in precision medicine. A strong track record in attracting funds at national and EU level allowed me to build a strong analytical laboratory infrastructure based on state-of-the-art optical systems and mass spectrometry instrumentation for analysis of complex gas mixtures. Starting with July 2021, I have expanded the research topics (“Exhaled Biomarkers and Exposure” became “Life Science Trace Detection Laboratory” – the TDLab, My lab has a strong analytical infrastructure based on state-of-the-art optical systems and mass spectrometry instrumentation. Our general research goal is to develop and apply techniques and analytical methodologies for reliable detection and quantification of compounds in complex (gas) mixtures. Currently we perform research in (1) developing mid-IR optical (multispecies) gas detection systems based on multipass absorption spectroscopy, open-path spectroscopy (with broadband sources), frequency comb spectroscopy, PICs, etc. for in situ measurements of environmental monitoring, plasma diagnosis, etc.(2) new methodologies using mass spectrometry for (real-time) chemical characterization of various environments (outdoor and indoor).
