About Simone Marini

In December 2011 I graduated, but the recession peak and the cuts to research hamstrung my wannabe researcher dream. Here comes the plot-twist. Right now I’m a post-doc at Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and I'm studying the effect of coppice woodland management and fires on flower resources and wild bee populations. My post-doctoral position is granted by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia e Pescia from the Giovani@RicercaScientifica grant competition. In 2013, I met a wonderful working group at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, headed by Anna-Camilla Moonen, a researcher. I participated in the call for a PhD position at the Scuola, I won, and I started my PhD path at Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna - Pisa in January 2014 and I graduated in September 2018. My PhD had been carried out in the framework of the 7th Framework Program project QuESSA I studied wild bees (Hymenoptera:Apoidea) as component of agro-biodiversity in agro-ecosystems having greater or lesser abundance of semi-natural habitats, trying to understand the contribution of the latter to sustain wild bee populations, and how these bees granted the pollination ecosystem service to sunflower. During this education and working experience, I had the possibility to work on and learn a bunch of stuff: • Communicate my knowledge to others and connect with project partners and stakeholders • Italian wild bee systematic • Usage of advanced statistical modelling (GLMM, multivariate analysis, time series.) • Usage of R, R Markdown, Latex and QGIS • Write a PhD thesis and publish scientific papers Beyond work, I’m homebrewer and I like to manage my very small vegetable garden.
