About Simone Rots
Dr. Simone Rots is an architectural historian and partner of Crimson Historians & Urbanists, an office that takes the contemporary city as its starting point, that works, writes, advises and teaches in the field of urban planning and architecture, combining historical research and the production of projects, which has also resulted in project development. Simone holds her PhD degree at Delft, University of Technology on the subject of the meeting point of modern urban planning and self-organisation, titled 'The Squatted New Town, Modern Movement meets Self-organisation in Venezuela'. She redefined the 'aided self help policy' with the 'sites & services scheme' for the current urbanisation questions. Since February 2014 she is Managing Director of the International New Town Institute (INTI), a think-and-do tank for young cities. After working worldwide, currently she is working with INTI in the European and Dutch context of urban transformation and spatial planning, with a focus on the Dutch new towns (Groeikernen). Since 2018 she is one of the co-founding members of the Independent School for the City. Simone Rots was the director of Hofbogen BV, Rotterdam and responsible for the transformation of a nineteenth century monumental train viaduct, which has led to experience in creative ways of organising and financing the redevelopment of cultural heritage. She is experienced in developing (cultural) events in the field of architecture and urban design and worked as project leader of WiMBY, an urban renewal project in Rotterdam/Hoogvliet, the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam 2005 and Rotterdam 2001, Cultural Capital of Europe.
