About Simone Tarquini

Simone Tarquini received a degree in Geological Sciences from the University of Pisa in 1994 with a thesis in Volcanology (Mt. Etna). Afterward, he worked as freelance petrologist for the decorative stone industry. Meanwhile (1995-96), he spent one year on a scholarship at the Laboratory of Applied Geology of the Univerity of Liège (Belgium) and four months at the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (Spain), developing image processing algorithms for the characterization of ore minerals. In he is consultant at the Earth Science department of Pisa University, carrying out texture analyses of mantle xenoliths and marbles and filing a patent (a scanning device for thin sections). In 2001 he entered the field of GIS and Remote Sensing, earning a scholarship (and later research fellows) at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR, Pisa) where he worked until 2004. Meanwhile, he spent again 4 months at the Univerity of Liège (2002), developing image processing algorithms to characterize cast iron and steel. In 2004 he entered the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) as GIS developer and GIS analyst, becoming technologist in 2005. S. Tarquini scientific activity spans from the microscopic analysis of rock textures to the processing of remote signals, focusing on the processing of elevation datasets (including LIDAR-derived DEMs) for landscape analysis. One of his main research interests is the numerical modeling of lava flows, with hazard and risk implications.
