About Skylar Kim

I started my teaching career as a corps member for Teach For America in New Orleans and taught at a small charter school in the city for two years. A decade later, it continues to be one of the most transformative and humbling experiences of my life; an experience that challenged my preconceptions about education, social studies and what it means to be a human being. My passion for teaching, equity, diversity and inclusion extend far beyond my time in New Orleans. For nearly a decade I taught in a school where I worked to end educational disparities in and outside of the classroom. I strived to make my classroom a safe and welcoming environment, a place where any student could thrive. Creating strong relationships and bonds with students fostered confidence and encouraged personal growth and risk-taking. I love integrating technology into the classroom and finding new tools to help drive student success. I worked to effect change on relational and structural levels. Structurally, I proposed a new course to extend access to Advanced Placement US Government, and I worked extensively with EOS, Equal Opportunity Schools, to identify and place students from historically marginalized or low-income backgrounds into Advanced Placement courses. I wrote new social studies curriculum that was diverse, inclusive and reflective of our student population. I held a number of leadership positions and chaired the school’s first school-wide Day of Service. I am passionate about civics and creating social studies curriculum that is diverse, inclusive and accessible to all. After relocating for my husband’s job, I am excited to find a new role that continues my life’s work.
