About Sofia Batalha

Biological complexity does not need to be a black box; for me, it is the most interesting challenge of all. My academic path was always guided by an intense curiosity for the biological mechanisms of Life- What is written in our genomes and how can we take advantage of it to advance modern healthcare- How does one zygote become the thousands of cell types that compose the human body- How do the many cell types and states of our immune system interact with one another, and how can we reverse unhealthy hyper- and hypo-activation? As a PhD student, my goal has been to tackle a branching question: what can we learn from the immune system of breast cancer patients in order to improve the quality of healthcare provided to them? During my PhD, I realized that my deep focus and analytical skills could be put to good use, so I invested in data-generating techniques like multicolor flow cytometry and single cell RNA-seq to get the most out of my experiments. I also honed my communication skills and actually became quite thrilled by the chances to share my work process and results with others, in a manner accessible to all. Currently, I consider myself a kind of "translator": first translating numbers into biological meaning, and finally translating this very niche-specific information into meaningful take-home messages for different audiences.
