About Sofia Garza

Ever since the first time I pipetted a DNA sample into an agarose gel, I have developed a particular fascination with the world of science. For me, just hearing the term “gel electrophoresis” makes me ecstatic. The chemistry of the DNA, the way the minuscule fragments glided across the gel, seemed almost magical to me. It was a carefully orchestrated dance, all explained by science. Gel electrophoresis, PCR, and other laboratory techniques are not mundane chores to me, but spellbinding tools used to explore the depths of the unknown using the scientific method. I am a passionate and insatiably curious UCLA graduate with the goal of attending a medical scientist training program (MSTP) in the future. My research interests include molecular oncology, the social determinants of health, reproductive and sexual health, and health disparities. While my research interests are broad and diverse, I plan to approach whatever research I pursue with an intersectional lens.
