About Solange Hamrin

Hi, I am Solange, and I am an assistant professor in the Department of Media and Communication at Mid Sweden University. My research focuses on Organizational Communication, Intercultural Communication, and Strategic Communication. My research is focused on the discursive construction of leadership, concentrating on the relationship between leaders and coworkers in different organizational and cultural contexts. I was part of the research team that defined and conceptualized the concept of Communicative Leadership. My studies on the concept emphasized the social construction of communicative leadership from leaders and coworkers’ perspectives in different organizations. The studies contribute to expanding knowledge about the notion of Communicative Leadership. I have also participated in the project Communicative Leadership Development (2017-2020) that studied the effects of leadership and communication programs on leaders in two Swedish multinationals with subsidiaries worldwide. Hamrin conducted a pilot-study on blue-colors workers with diverse ethnic backgrounds living and working in Sweden and leaders. This study stresses that leaders have to promote and create adequate conditions for the coworkers’ interactions since the workplace relationships are as relevant as leaders' with coworkers' relationships to the communication dynamics and collaborations in the workplace. The study was conducted employing qualitative methods (interviews and observations) in three senior nursing homes in the city of Sundsvall in Sweden. Five leaders (only one with other backgrounds than Swedish) and 16 coworkers with diverse ethnic backgrounds participated in the study. In my current role at Mid Sweden University, I teach subjects such as within the fields Organizational communication and Strategic Communication, and qualitative methods. I also supervise and examine the final monographs of students and also provide guest lectures. I coordinate the program Master by Research and the development of the master of Strategic Communication. I am the current international coordinator for the Department of Media and communication as well. In addition, I represent the faculty in Committee of ethics in research, and represent the Media and communication program from Mid Sweden University at the Swedish association for media and communication.
