Background

About Sonal Sinha

I am currently completing my Master of Laws (LLM) in Intellectual Property Rights at the University of Edinburgh. My academic interests lie at the intersection of law, technology, and culture with a particular curiosity for how legal systems respond to new forms of creativity, identity, and regulation. My current research as part of my dissertation examines the limits of copyright in digital culture, focusing on how doctrines like fair dealing and fair use shape freedom of expression online. But my broader passion lies in exploring the "negative spaces" of law, those areas where practice and innovation outpace regulation. Whether it’s internet memes, NFTs, personality rights, or the regulatory gaps in AI governance, I am drawn to legal questions that challenge conventional categories and require interdisciplinary insight. Alongside formal research, I’ve built a strong writing and editorial profile. I’ve worked as a legal editor, podcast consultant, and content strategist, translating complex legal ideas into accessible formats for public and academic audiences. I’m currently a Research Assistant to Dr Emmanuel Oke, analyzing the policy and development dimensions of TRIPS Article 67, and contributing to SCRIPTed, a leading journal at the intersection of law, technology, and society at the University of Edinburgh. I see research as a form of critical inquiry, one that is not only doctrinal but deeply connected to lived realities, ethical tensions, and evolving technologies. I am particularly interested in how legal frameworks can be more responsive, inclusive, and grounded in the social contexts they seek to regulate. Always open to meaningful discussions and collaborations in legal research, writing, or academic projects, especially across IP, digital rights, and legal theory. Let’s connect if you're working in IP law, tech policy, or rights-based legal scholarship.
