About Sonia Ciudad

After doing a PhD in molecular recognition of protein surfaces through a fellowship from “La Caixa” at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB), I moved to the IECB in Bordeaux to set up a new lab under the direction Dr. Natàlia Carulla. For the last two years I have been working there as Postdoctoral Researcher leading a project based on solving the 3D structure of a beta-pore forming Abeta42 oligomer.I earned my master’s degree while completing an Esteve-UAB fellowship in Esteve Quimica for two years, where I learned how to apply advanced spectroscopic techniques like NMR and HPLC-MS to developing APIs. I accomplished many structural elucidations of impurities and some API characterizations. I also developed a new method for the optical purity determination of an API by NMR spectroscopy using chiral solvating agents; an article based on this chiral NMR method was published (Redondo, J; Capdevila, A; Ciudad, S. Determination of the Enantiomeric Purity of the Antiasthmatic Drug Montelukast by Means of 1H NMR Spectroscopy. Chirality (2013), 25(11), 780-786). These two years in Esteve-Química enabled me to acquire some skills such as the ability to work on a multidisciplinary team and to communicate with specialists in other areas.After this I compete with more than 150 international candidates to obtain a "LaCaixa"PhD International Fellowship. During my PhD I worked on molecular recognition of protein surfaces using small proteins and peptides. In 2016 I obtained my PhD degree with cum laude. Nowadays I am working on the elucidation of the 3D structure of a pore forming oligomer formed by the amyloid beta peptide.
