Background
About Sonia Vovan
I am currently a PhD candidate and physiotherapist with a specialized focus on concussion management and vestibular rehabilitation, combining 10+ years of clinical expertise with cutting-edge research. My passion lies in understanding and treating "invisible" conditions, such as concussions and vestibular disorders. Current Research: I'm currently pursuing my PhD in Kinesiology and Health Science at York University under the supervision of Dr. Lauren Sergio and Dr. Jennifer Campos at the KITE Research Institute. My doctoral research investigates sex-related differences in multi-domain changes following concussions in working-aged adults, using StreetLab, an innovative virtual reality simulator, and the Brain Dysfunction Indicator, a neurocognitive assessment tool. Clinical Mission: Bridging the gap between research and practice to improve outcomes for patients with concussion and vestibular disorders through evidence-based treatment, specialized education, and advocacy for these often misunderstood conditions. Key Roles & Leadership: I conduct concussion and vestibular physiotherapy assessments as a physiotherapist with expertise in these specialized fields. My leadership extends to the broader professional community as Communications Director for the Brain Injury Association of York Region and as Secretary for the Neurosciences Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. I also hold an Adjunct Lecturer position at the University of Toronto's Physical Therapy Department. Expertise & Impact: My clinical expertise centers on having completed the competency-based vestibular rehabilitation course at Duke University and 10+ years of clinical experience working directly with patients. As an educator, I've developed "The Dizzy Brain" course, mentored 25+ physiotherapists, and taught in the MScPT program at U of T in the neurological unit and vestibular selective. Let's Connect: I'm passionate about advancing concussion management and vestibular rehabilitation through research, education, and clinical excellence. I'm always eager to connect with fellow researchers, clinicians, and advocates - whether you're interested in collaboration, sharing clinical insights, or discussing the latest research in these specialized fields! hello@soniavovan.com |
