About Sonja Buchberger
I am a social anthropologist teaching in the areas of tourism, hospitality, methodology and social sciences. I graduated in Development Studies and Arabic/Islamic Studies at the University of Vienna, with a dissertation on local perceptions of tourism as a development opportunity in Tunisia. I obtained my PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, in 2013. My doctoral research dealt with the anthropology of tourism and hospitality. More particularly, I looked at emerging forms of youth travel and domestic hospitality in the Maghreb. With my lecturing at institutions like the Ecole hoteliere de Lausanne (Switzerland), Karlshochschule International University (Germany) and SOAS (UK), I have pursued these research interests, while extending them to issues of management and studies of work environments.
