Background
About Sonya Cotton
I am an interdisciplinary socio-legal researcher, with a background in languages, critical pedagogies and law. My PhD was funded by the ERC, part of the project Property [In]Justice, at the Sutherland School of Law, University College Dublin. Drawing on archival research, legal ethnography and doctrinal work, my research examines the meaning of 'community' in international law as used in the context of land rights. I further illustrated how colonial and apartheid ontologies of collective personhood continue to exist transnationally, constraining the legal standing of groups seeking to challenge unjust and non-democratic uses of space/place. My interests include TWAIL, feminist and decolonial approaches to international law, linguistic and legal anthropology, and legal geography.
