About Sophie Appleton

Kia ora, I'm Sophie! I have a background in environmental earth sciences and experience in sustainability consulting, ecological advisory and social change education. I think and see the world in systems, and apply my understanding of the interconnectedness of human and natural systems to work towards social justice and equity. I am interested in the interrelatedness of gender, race, economics and environment. I'm currently the operations manager and programme director for Newkind Social Justice Conference, working closely with the CEO to curate leading-edge conversations on socioeconomic and environmental justice that centre a diversity of perspectives, as well as organising the conference experience. I am also the managing director of Kind Enterprises, playing a central role in the running of the company, whilst also supporting clients to strategise and implement positive change in the areas of Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE & I), Economic Justice, Systems Change and more. My work in social change is driven by the optimism that achieving a just, equitable and regenerative world is not only possible, but inevitable, and that our very purpose on this planet is to contribute our unique gifts, skills and talents to this trajectory. I'm originally from Aotearoa with Ngāti Rua heritage, but lived the majority of my life overseas, growing up in Bahrain and now living in Australia.
