About Sophie Camplejohn

I am a pre-law student at Vassar College, pursuing a Bachelor’s in Psychological Science with a Hispanic Studies Concentration. My solid legal background is rooted in my prior studies as a Dual-Degree Law and International Relations student at Instituto de Empresa Universidad (IE University) in Spain. I am currently a legal intern at the Dutchess County Public Defense Office. I conduct intake interviews in English and Spanish with new clients and gain critical experience in criminal justice and social work. My previous legal experience includes interning at the California Appellate Project, where I researched the California Racial Justice Act (RJA) and capital punishment appeals. I helped defense attorneys nationwide address racial bias in prosecutorial language. In my second year, I took on specific cases and wrote memorandums on violations of the RJA in trial proceedings. Additionally, I volunteered at the Advanced Legal Clinic Lab at IE University for two years, collaborating with Inclusive Sí, Especial También, on a U.N. deliverable regarding special education in the EU. My work focused on analyzing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and formulating legal arguments for greater inclusion. My passions range from social and criminal justice to language study to the mind and human behavior. I aim to continue to apply my skills to jobs that pursue these interests.
