About Sophie Rawson

I work as a Biodiversity & Conservation Officer for a regional council in South Australia. My role focuses on maintaining and improving environmental reserves, including numerous dune systems, riparian ecosystems and large areas of remnant woodlands. Within this role I work closely with volunteer groups and collaborate with other environmental groups (such as Landscapes SA & Birdlife Australia). I have previous experience working as an Ecologist in Queensland, in a role specialising in bird and bat surveys on proposed wind farm sites. In this position I undertook intensive field surveys on remote properties as well as data analysis, report writing and field trip logistics. Additionally, I have 5 years of academic experience within a conservation-based field, two years employment experience at sea in wildlife tourism and a strong held passion and desire for conservation and ecology. I an an active member of Victor Harbor Dolphin Watch in South Australia, a citizen science group which consisted of dolphin surveys monthly through photographic ID out at sea. I have been privileged throughout my studies to have researched elephant behaviour in South Africa, butterfly diversity in Fiji and coral reef ecology on Heron Island. Throughout my studies I focussed on understanding the effectiveness of camera traps in measuring colony activity in burrowing seabirds.
