About Soraya Pol

We have gained security and survival, but in the process we have lost our sense of wonder." Soraya Pol graduated from her journalism education in 2014 and immediately started working as a researcher for character-driven documentaries for various public broadcasters and production companies. During this work she was part of the production process of some of the best viewed and award-winning documentaries (series) in the Netherlands. Over the years, her work as a researcher slowly but surely changed into that of a creative filmmaker. Inspired by the stories she heard, the people she met, and her vision of society – the stories quickly began to take creative visual forms in her head. She translates these creative images into innovative and magical documentation material. Soraya grew up in a small Dutch fishing town called Den Helder as the child of a Caribbean father (Curacao) and Dutch mother who owns a pub. At an early age Soraya became familiar with the richness in the frayed edges of society at an early age. Through life experience and human knowledge, Soraya almost effortlessly comes close to all the characters that are central to the stories to be told and she tries to expose major social themes in a vulnerable and disarming way. As a substantive starting point, she finds it important at all times to offer a future perspective with her work. A future perspective aimed at more equality, connection and intimacy. To visualize a more equal, more free and more loving future. Framed with colorful, dreamy and even humorous images, she tries to give new meaning to human existence, pain and discomfort.
