Background
About Soun Lee
Title: Transcriptome Analysis of Human and Chimpanzee Hippocampus I am a senior at UMass Amherst studying Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and a member of the Commonwealth Honors College. Currently I am working in Dr. Courtney Babbitt's lab in the Biology Department, analyzing RNA-Seq data from human and chimpanzee hippocampus. The goal of my project is to narrow down a group of differentially expressed long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) using conservation as a proxy. The idea behind this concept is that anything that is conserved between human and chimpanzee must be important. Since the human transcriptome is full of noise due to transcription pervasiveness, this technique provides us a way to focus on some of the biological relevant lncRNAs. Tools used to complete this project include: TopHat, htseq-count, and edgeR. For graduate study, I am interested in combining computation and experimental biology to gain a better understanding of the biology behind the human brain and the neurological and neurodegenerative diseases associated with the human brain.
