Spencer Vickers is a Partner at Conyers in the Cayman Islands Litigation & Restructuring practice. Spencer has extensive experience advising clients on a range of insolvency, restructuring and commercial litigation matters, including regulatory disputes. This includes frequently advising clients on applications regarding the appointment of liquidators/receivers. Spencer also regularly advises clients in relation to a wide range of information gathering proceedings. This includes frequently advising on Norwich Pharmacal orders, shareholders’ rights of access to company information, and requests for information/documents under the Data Protection Act, Proceeds of Crime Act and Criminal Justice (International Cooperation) Act. He has represented investment firms, insurance businesses (including captive insurers and their professional advisors), insolvency professionals and sovereign states on a range of complex cross-border matters with specific experience in the financial services, insurance, FinTech and health industries. In the digital assets space, Spencer frequently acts for cryptocurrency companies (including wallet providers, exchanges and blockchain developers) in relation to a wide range of commercial disputes (including disputes in connection with token generation events, lockup periods and liquidity providers). Spencer is also a committee member of the Cayman Islands chapter of the CFAAR (Crypto Fraud and Asset Recovery) Network. Spencer is an experienced advocate, both in Court and in arbitration proceedings. He appears frequently before the Grand Court and Court of Appeal of the Cayman Islands and has been praised by the Court for his “persistent eloquence”. In 2024, Spencer was appointed Co-Chair of the Recovery and Insolvency Specialists Association of the Cayman Islands (RISA Cayman). RISA Cayman is the INSOL chapter for the Cayman Islands and has over 500 members (consisting of accountants and lawyers specializing in Cayman Islands restructuring and insolvency). Spencer is also an author, presenter and course coordinator of the INSOL Introductory Certificate in Insolvency Law and Practice in the Cayman Islands.
