Background

About Srikanth Kandula

I am a Senior Principal Engineer at Amazon Web Services. Earlier, I was a partner researcher in the Networking group at Microsoft Research, Redmond. My interests are broadly in building and analyzing networked systems. I have had the privilege of working besides many amazing interns and collaborators in both academia and industry. Our work has received awards such as a Test-of-Time award at SIGCOMM, best paper awards at VLDB, NSDI (twice) and SoCC. I’ve been a program committee chair (SIGCOMM'25, NSDI'26) and program committee member at key venues in databases, computer networks and distributed systems. Technologies that have directly resulted from my research include * SWAN (which carries over half of the bytes between Microsoft’s datacenters),* samplers and query optimizer pushdown rules in SCOPE (the in-house data lake and analytics system at Microsoft),* a distribution advisor for Synapse and the outlier mitigation technique in SCOPE. I have also been a key collaborator on other technologies that have received wide adoption in Microsoft:* VL2 (a first full bisection-bandwidth datacenter network design),* QuickBuild (microsoft’s distributed build system) and * Sirius (which disaggregates stateful network functions into bags of programmable NICs and is in GA at Azure).
