Background
About Stacie Woolard
I am the Research Operations Manager for the Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Shared Resource facility at St Jude Children's Research Hospital with 17 years of experience. As manager of the FCSSR, I manage nine highly experienced staff members (three direct reports) and operate any of the 20 different facility cytometers (12 flow analyzers ranging from 18-color conventional analyzers to 40+ color full spectrum analyzers, and eight contemporary cell sorters ranging from 18-color conventional sorters to a 30+ color full spectrum sorter). The FCCSR staff use this equipment to serve the research community at the institution to facilitate their research by providing expertise in all facets of flow cytometry and cell sorting (over 90 independent labs). My flow cytometry skills have grown to include performing basic to highly complex flow analyses, cell sorting using any of eight cell sorters for simple to complex experiments, experimental design and execution using a very wide variety of protocols, and consultations with many users regarding experimental design, detailed protocols, and interpretation of results. The range of experimental protocols with which I have experience is wide and includes: 1) multi-parameter characterization and isolation of rare cell populations (using fluorescent proteins or a complex panel of monoclonal antibodies and/or dyes), 2) single cell sorting for single cell cloning, sequencing, etc (into multi-well plates or PCR tubes) and 3) performing specialized sorting techniques and sample preparation for users to performing FISH (fluorescent in-situ hybridizations) assays. To remain relevant in the cytometry field, I have continuously improved my education and training in advanced cytometry by attending many continuing education seminars and attending conferences to explore new technologies. I have obtained the American Society of Clinical Pathology examination to be a licensed cytometry specialist, SCYM (ASCP)CM. Recently, I have become very active within the flow cytometry field, both regionally and internationally. Within the International Society of Advancing Cytometry (ISAC) I am a core member of the ISAC Shared Resource Labs (SRL) committee and ISAC CYTO Women’s Task Force. I am the vice president of the Southeastern Flow Cytometry Interest Group (SEFCIG), a regional chapter of ISAC. To improve my skills as a manager of a core facility, I have recently been selected to be an executive board member of the Southeastern Association of Shared Resources (SEASR).
