About Stefan Bohn

The function of a living cell is defined by the activity and interactions of its protein complexes. Understanding the properties of these interaction networks is necessary to predict cellular fate, in particular during malfunctions in disease. I am integrating systems and structural biology approaches to generate models of pathways and protein complexes. I studied genetic interaction networks of histone mutants to gain insights to transcriptional regulation as well as to extract structural models of protein complexes involved in chromatin biology. For the past years I have returned to using cryo-electron microscopy single particle analysis to study protein-protein interactions in a close-to-native state. Here my research is centered on protein complexes of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, in particular in the elucidation of transient interactions. Moreover, I am continuing my early stage research of viruses and plants, to gain insights of viral protein structures as well as the assembly process of photosystem II.
