About Stefania Nazzal

Stefania Nazzal (b. 1976 ) is a Swiss artist who is currently based in Dubai. Nazzal trained at the Cyprus Academy of Art and at Central Saint Martins in London. Working in mixed media, Nazzal weaves together bold colours to create dreamlike often paradoxical compositions through a meticulous creative process. For Nazzal, the rainbow carries deep personal meaning, as a symbol of hope and the transience of life. Through her practice she performs a reflection, refraction and dispersion of light, constructing whimsical colourscapes that depict the spectrum of light in multicolored forms. ”A perfect curve bending beyond the sky, no end in sight… Fables tell treasures await true believers. My initial inspiration came from my first ever encounter with a rainbow, which offered a moment of magic and hope during a difficult time in my life. Escaping with colour manipulation, a reflective process that I brought to my practice today. Through a process of repetition built on thousands of strings, my work becomes meditative, offering an escape from the world in both the process and creation and my resulting whimsical colorscape inspired by natural phenomenon’s. The phenomenon can neither be owned nor reached and can never be contained. ‘’Within seconds on seeing one, even to this day, it is just magical. An instant inner peace and ultimate comfort of hope. MEDIUM: Throughout her practice, Nazzal continues to experiment with different mediums. Her primary medium of choice is PVC, for the sculptural quality and strong color pigment it offers her works. Her use of PVC also has a sustainability objective, by repurposing PVC materials that would otherwise be harmful to the environment. As her practice evolves, she continues to introduce different mediums, building on thousands of layers of PVC strings with diamond dust.
