About Stefanie Wickstrom

Community organizing and teaching are my passions. By serving nonprofits and working in higher ed, I promote social justice and sustainability where I live. Since 2021, I have served as the executive director of APOYO, a nonprofit at work in Central Washington for more than 25 years. APOYO is a nonprofit organization serving Latino im/migrants, low-income communities, houseless people and Central Washington University students since 1995. We provide ethnically-sensitive food, clothing and other material support. We also empower people by connecting them with essential services for such things as housing, health care, education, and childcare. We can help people with Spanish-English translation. We can help people find legal assistance. In partnership with Central Washington University, we offer educational opportunities. As a teacher, I've worked for over 30 years in higher education, creating and teaching courses in political science, environmental studies, Latin American studies, American Indian studies, and Spanish. I have studied and taught about the environment and politics in Latin America, the U.S. and Canada. Struggles of indigenous peoples to protect their lands, rights, and cultures have been my focus.
