About Stefano Romano

Stefano Romano,(Naples, 1975) artist curator, and researcher. At the core of his artistic practice is the need to express the contradictions of reality, often investigated in relation to architecture, urban and social contexts. His approach is based on the idea of the work as an “event,” a spatiotemporal process that often needs the viewer’s active participation to complete itself. In this way, art projects become conversations that allow for the development of an alternative point of view to the dominant narratives. A certain idea of failure or suspension given by the uncertainty of the present characterizes all his artworks. The research is translated into temporary actions, performances, installations, video works, photographs, and drawings. He completed a double PhD in architecture and urban planning at the University of Ferrara (Italy) and at Polis University in Tirana (Albania). He is a researcher at the Academy of Sciences of Albania, in the Center for Art Studies. He has been working for more than twenty years in Albania where he conceived several projects as an artist as well as curator, among which we can mention: 1.60insurgent space project whose focus was the public space; he was also co-founder of the T.I.C.A.(Tirana Institute of Contemporary Art). In 2012 he was co-founder of the DZT collective (DyZeroTre) and of the MAPS – Mobile Archive on Public Space platform. His latest project is The Mobile School of Visual Arts; a pedagogical project based on the idea of art as the production of knowledge and active participation.
