I am interested in trace gases and physiochemical properties of natural and anthropogenic aerosols, boundary layer cloud microphysics, droplet residual chemistry as well as direct and indirect aerosol effects, which I study by analyzing in-situ and satellite-based observations. Over the last decade I have participated in a number of major airborne field campaigns with NASA and NSF/NCAR, in which I initially contributed by operating and maintaining aerosol and trace gas instrumentation aboard research aircraft and by preparing and analyzing large scientific data sets. During the latest multi-year field campaign (NASA ORACLES; African biomass burning research) I have also contributed to budgetary policies, initiated new hires, managed logistics, and instructed students and laboratory technicians in my role as research affiliate within the environmental aerosol research group of the University of Hawaii. In addition, I designed and developed new aerosol measurement techniques. I am with the State Agency for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, since summer 2021, where I manage day-to-day operations of the Division of Continuous Air Quality Monitoring, which oversees the states extensive automated monitoring network for particulate mass (PM10, PM2.5) and trace gases (NOx, O3, CO2, SO2) as well as some selected measurement sites that are used to detect soot particle mass and ultrafine particle size and concentration.
