About Stephan Dreyer

I am currently working as a stormwater engineer at AECOM's Cape Town offices. My previous position was a Civil Engineer in Jones & Wagener's Centurion offices. My role mostly involved hydraulic design of stormwater infrastructure for mining projects, mine landform design for dumps and tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and rehabilitation design for opencast and underground operations. I have a keen interest in hydraulics and have experience with dam design, flood hydrology, dam break assessments (including tailings facilities), river hydraulics, open channel hydraulics, erosion protection systems, hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) modelling, and pipeline and pumpstation design. I obtained my Master's degree (MEng) in Civil Engineering (Cum Laude), specialising in hydraulic structures, from the University of Stellenbosch where I also obtained my Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree (Cum Laude). I presented my thesis findings at the South African National Committee on Large Dams (SANCOLD) conference in 2018 for which I was awarded "Best Young (under 40) Presenter". As part of my postgraduate studies I completed three courses:"Pipeline and Pumpstation Design","Design, Construction, Operation and Maintenance of Dams in Africa" and "Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)". As a graduate engineer during my Master's studies, I also assisted in the design and laboratory testing of hydraulic models for dams, weirs, water abstraction works and other hydraulic structures. I am a registered candidate engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and an associate member of the South African Institution for Civil Engineering (SAICE). I would describe myself as a hardworking and highly motivated team player with a solid understanding of the civil engineering discipline. I pride myself on being adaptable in the working environment with an open mindset to new ideas, technology and sustainability. I strive for innovation within my profession as well as contributing to my company and the greater society. I believe in a good work-life balance and my personal interests include various sports, training at the gym, outdoor activities, photography and fishing.
