About Stephan Ehrmann

As a professor of intensive care medicine and head of ICU at Tours University Hospital, I’ve built my career at the intersection of clinical innovation, academic leadership, and frontline care. My path has been guided by a commitment to translating research into better outcomes for critically ill patients — especially in the fields of respiratory failure and inhaled therapies. Over the past decade, I’ve led several large-scale randomized controlled trials, including the landmark AMIKINHAL study (NEJM, 2023), the largest to date on inhaled antibiotics in ventilated ICU patients. I also coordinated an international meta-trial on awake prone positioning during COVID-19, shaping global guidelines in real time. Beyond clinical research, I’m passionate about bridging disciplines — from simulation-based medical education to patient-centered technological innovations like eye-tracking communication for intubated patients. As president of the Clinical Research & Innovation Office (DRCI) and co-coordinator of the CRICS-TriggerSEP network, I work to foster collaborative, cross-sector solutions that drive forward academic medicine. What I bring is a mix of hands-on ICU expertise, translational research vision, and a strong network across Europe’s critical care landscape. I’m always open to connecting with peers, innovators, and partners passionate about advancing intensive care.
