About Stephanie Mier

I'm a fourth-year Communication major and Business Communication Writing Minor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Since 2020, I have been a member of the UCSB College of Letters and Science Honors Program, expected to graduate with honors in the Spring of 2023. I'm passionate about student outreach in higher education and intent on entering the field of Public Relations. I've been a part of multiple student outreach projects in high school and at my current university. At Granada Hills Charter High School, I served as the Assistant Director of Public Relations and English Peer Tutor. At UCSB, I was a peer mentor in the Communication Department, an incredibly competitive major. I hosted weekly peer mentoring meetings with students and visit classes to offer the program’s services to students. I’ve been able to use my interpersonal skills to make connections with my peers as well as those in the Communication Department. My work in this program was so fulfilling- I’ve made so many connections with other students, had the opportunity to assist them in subjects I’m passionate about, and explore my passion for student advocacy and making academic spaces more accessible and supportive. As a Communication major, I am taking upper-division classes that give me research experience written communication skills, and interpersonal skills that are essential to Public Relations work. These courses include Marketing Communication, Interpersonal Communication class, and more. I have taken a Public Relations Writing class as a part of my prerequisites for the professional writing minor, allowing me to develop my writing skills for a variety of contexts. Currently, I am a part of the Business Communication Writing Minor, where I have the opportunity to develop my skills in designing media documents for the workplace. For example, I am currently a part of a team who is developing promotional materials for the UCSB Writing Minor Graduate Speaker series. The skills I am developing in this writing minor will help prepare me for the real-world application of my skills in academic and professional settings.
