Background
About Stephanie Ray
Chief Scientist | National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) Leading Oceanographic and Atmospheric Data Innovation As the Chief Scientist at the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC), I am responsible for overseeing and advancing the scientific operations that support the collection, management, and dissemination of critical oceanographic and atmospheric data. NDBC is a premier provider of real-time environmental data, particularly through our network of buoys deployed across the world’s oceans. I guide the scientific direction and strategy for: Data Collection & Monitoring: Leading efforts to enhance the network of data buoys and ocean observation systems that monitor a range of environmental factors, including sea surface temperature, wave height, wind speed, barometric pressure, and more. Scientific Research & Innovation: Driving the integration of advanced technologies and methods to improve data quality, accuracy, and coverage. I collaborate with various research teams and institutions to ensure the data is used for oceanographic research, weather forecasting, and climate monitoring. Data Analysis & Interpretation: Overseeing the analysis of complex data sets to inform national and international efforts on issues such as climate change, maritime safety, and environmental monitoring. I work with meteorologists, oceanographers, and other stakeholders to translate raw data into actionable insights. Stakeholder Engagement: Representing NDBC’s scientific interests to key partners, agencies, and the public, including NOAA, the U.S. Navy, and various academic and research institutions. I ensure that our data supports national needs in weather forecasting, disaster response, and environmental protection. Leadership & Mentorship: Leading a team of talented scientists and technical staff, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement in the field of ocean observation. I mentor emerging scientists and collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to achieve NDBC’s mission. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and scientific expertise, I am committed to ensuring that the NDBC’s data remains at the forefront of global environmental monitoring efforts, helping to safeguard both human and ecological systems from the impacts of changing ocean conditions
