About Stephen Arndt

Stephen M. Arndt graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering in 1984. He spent the first eight years of his professional career working in the field of aviation crash safety and aircrew protection as a research engineer at Simula, Inc. Mr. Arndt added automotive crash safety to his work experience, first at Arndt & Associates, Ltd. starting in 1992, and now at SEFA, Inc, which he formed in 1998. Mr. Arndt specializes in vehicle dynamics (stability and control) and accident reconstruction on the automotive side and Crash Resistant Fuel Systems (CRFS) for helicopters on the aviation side. He provides expert testimony in these areas of crash safety. He has conducted numerous full scale vehicle handling tests to evaluate stability and control issues. Research areas include evaluating the handling characteristics of vehicles when they experience tire failures with an emphasis on tire tread separations. Other areas of vehicle dynamics research include Electronic Stability Control (ESC) effectiveness, rollover propensity, and rollover accident reconstruction. Mr. Arndt has participated in full scale testing of numerous vehicles, including various size SUV’s, trucks, vans, minivans, and sedans. His research has led to the publication of numerous peer reviewed technical papers. In addition, Mr. Arndt has been an invited lecturer on his research topics. He currently is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the National Association of Professional Accident Reconstruction Specialists (NAPARS), and the Vertical Flight Society (VFS).
