About Stephen Ashford

Dr Ashford has published peer-reviewed papers in the rehabilitation literature as well as book chapters and clinical guideline contributions. He has experience of writing for publication independently and with others and of acting as a reviewer for a number of peer reviewed journals. His PhD work has been contributory to the publication of national guidelines (Royal College of Physicians, 2009) on the management of spasticity using botulinum toxin and concurrent therapy interventions. He has contributed to the spasticity section of the updated intercollegiate stroke guidelines (hosted by the Royal College of Physicians). Dr Ashford, in collaboration with colleagues, has undertaken work on an intercollegiate guideline for splinting intervention in neurological rehabilitation. He has maintained a strong focus on clinical practice since graduating as a physiotherapist. After gaining general experience in physiotherapy and rehabilitation, he has specialised in rehabilitation and management of those with long-term neurological conditions including stroke, acquired brain injury and degenerative conditions. He has experience of neurorehabilitation in acute hospital environments including intensive care, through to long stay settings and nursing homes for those with profound neurodisability requiring long-term management. He has gained experience in specialist rehabilitation settings for those with Acquired Brain Injury (including challenging behaviour). He has also developed extensive skills in disability management initially through work at the Royal Hospital for Neurodisability and for the last 10 years with the RRU specialist outreach service.
