About Stephen Ayling

I have worked in academia, the civil service (MOD) and industry moving from applied research to product development and management. I have a wide experience of working as an individual, within project teams, as a team leader, project manager and bid writer. My past experience includes world leading 40Gb/s networks (Nortel Networks); a number of UK firsts in opto-electronics for microwave systems (DERA); Technology Road-mapping, Strategy & Tracking and developing Quantum Key Distribution systems for highly secure fibre optic networks (QinetiQ). In I joined the IET (Fellow in 2013) gaining Chartered Engineer status. At BAE Systems I was a Consultant Engineer and Design Team Manager in Submarine Solutions (Barrow), the UKs only nuclear submarine builder. I lead the Internal Communication Systems Team develop my technical and managerial skills and competencies. My role supported the security aspects of the system design and accreditation whilst delivering the operational needs of the users. At Dstl I was a Technical Partner/contractor managing industry contracts developing C4I-STAR secure submarine coalition (US+UK) SATCOM communication networks and through water optical communication systems. Recently I was at BAE Systemssupporting the OCOMMS Phase 2 and 3 programmes as a Communications Specialist contractor. I have now returned to QinetiQ as a permenant employee looked at technologies for advanced LIDAR systems.
