About Stephen Balkam

A serial social entrepreneur, I have set up four organizations and turned around a couple more in both the US and UK. I am the Founder and CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute, an international non-profit dedicated to making the online world safer and more civil for kids and their families. We promote the 3 P’s: enlightened public policy; industry best practice and good digital parenting. We work to build a Culture of Responsibility online and a sense of digital citizenship for all. Prior to this, I set up the Internet Content Rating Association – the world’s leading content rating system on the web. And before that, the Recreational Software Advisory Council where I oversaw an innovative self-labeling system for computer games and, eventually, for websites. I have run organizations as diverse as the National Stepfamily Association (UK), Islington Voluntary Action Council (London) and Camden Community Transport. I write regularly for LinkedIn, Huffington Post and appear on television and radio regularly. I love to bring new ideas into reality and positively enjoy the creative disruption that technology brings while finding ways to mitigate its worst effects. I am a life long learner and eternal optimist. And my favorite Richard Bach quote is,"You teach best what you most need to learn."
