Background

About Stephen Edwards

I completed my B.Sc. with majors in Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry and subsequently my M.Sc. in Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Western Australia, before later completing my Ph.D. in the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Sydney, under the supervision of Prof Laurie Mather. I have worked in the areas of pharmacology particularly in relation to drugs acting on the central nervous system, behavioural pharmacology, bioanalysis and assay validation, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, drug metabolism, and drug development. I have worked extensively with LC-MS, HPLC, and GC-MS, as well as with laboratory rodent models, and also have experience with histology and immunohistochemistry. Earlier work while working as a Research Academic for Prof Laurie Mather in the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management at the University of Sydney included studies of the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and biodistribution of thiopentone enantiomers, in addition to studies of the pharmacokinetics and biodistribution of ketamine enantiomers. I have been working as a Research Officer for Professor Maree Smith since 2002, initially in The School of Pharmacy and then in the Centre for Integrated Preclinical Drug Development/TetraQ at The University of Queensland, where I have worked on a number of projects including the pharmacokinetics of morphine and oxycodone and their respective primary metabolites, and the development of LC-MS assays for angiotensin II type 2 receptor antagonists. More recently, I have worked on the evaluation and validation of 2 transgenic mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease using the Morris water maze, as part of a collaborative research grant held by Prof Maree Smith. Additionally, I also have experience with using WinNonlin for the pharmacokinetic analysis of clinical trial data, and with scientific writing for commercial research projects. To date I have 32 publications in international peer reviewed journals.
