About Stephen Fatum

I am a partner in the Chicago office of the law firm of Barnes & Thornburg LLP, which has over 700 attorneys in 24 cities from coast to coast. My practice focuses on health care law. I have a national niche advising physicians and leaders of physician organizations about very sensitive legal and strategic issues related to business opportunities and conflict resolution where relationships are critical to finding a practical business solution. My approach involves critical listening, probing questions, and a thorough understanding of the opportunities, fears and risks facing all the parties. I counsel, negotiate, mediate, and advocate on behalf of clients with a focus on what can be done in compliance with the law. I appeal to the enlightened self interest of the parties, encourage collaboration and invite decision-makers to think out of the box. Other types of services I provide include: • Development of strategies to align physicians and hospitals to create value for patients and payers with the goals of documenting improvements in: quality of care, better service, and lower costs. • Mediation and resolution of disputes by and among physicians and hospitals and physicians. • Negotiating, drafting, reviewing or amending corporate bylaws, asset purchase agreements, employment agreements, medical staff bylaws, stock purchase agreements, operating agreements, compensation plans, joint venture agreements, affiliation agreements, collaboration agreements, managed care payer agreements, and recruitment agreements. • Counsel in connection with compliance with health care laws and regulation. I am admitted to practice in the state of Illinois. I am also listed in the current editions of The Best Lawyers in America® in the Health Care area. For six years I served as an adjunct faculty member at Loyola University Law School in Chicago and since taught a course on Physician Regulation and Practice Management.
