Background

About Stephen Goodyear

I am former a student at the University of Georgia, double majoring in History and Philosophy and graduated in the Spring of 2024. In addition to my dual majors, I completed several minors (International Affairs; Transnational European Studies; Law, Jurisprudence, and the State). I am currently pursuing a Masters in Philosophy and Theology at Boston College. I plan to pursue a joint PhD/JD program after my graduation. My academic content ranges from work in both the "Continental" and "Analytic" philosophical traditions to topics in Ancient and medieval philosophy and forays into political science, cultural history, and jurisprudence. I am currently interested in the dialogue between religion and philosophy, and at Boston College I plan on pursuing questions central to how we can understand the role of philosophy in relation to Christian theology. Theologically, my interests range from studying the Church Fathers and the Thomistic tradition to more modern work surrounding the innovations brought about by the Second Vatican Council, such as the works of Bernard Lonergan, Ferdinand Ulrich, René Girard, Maurice Blondel, and Hans Urs Von Balthasar. On the more pure philosophical side, I am currently working on projects related to syntheses of psychoanalytical and phenomenological traditions through the joint reading of Martin Heidegger and Jacques Lacan, along with projects on ancient and medieval political theory. The uniting factor of these projects remains my interest in the possibility of and subsequent grounding of philosophy as a unified science where objective knowledge is deemed possible, and what the implications of such a science include: especially ethically. In conjunction with my dedication to my work, I place a crucial emphasis on interpersonal relationships, both with my superiors and my peers. I believe in creating high-performance work environments as I have been responsible for the management of multiple assets such as private boats, and these environments required efficient communication and dedication from everyone on my team. I highly value integrity, and I always actively seek to create workspaces that emphasize candor, especially in more high-volume situations.
