Like so many others, I gravitated into Public Relations after a spell in journalism. I was living in London and moved around two or three consultancies. I landed an Account Director role with the most nationally significant campaign, I think I have ever worked on. I led the media campaign to convince Mrs Thatcher's government to ditch its investment in the next generation of airborne early warning defence systems, GECs 'Nimrod' in favour of an American bid to supply us with their system,'AWACS'. We won. I'll tell you more in a separate post. From there, I freelanced. I put an advertisement in the industry paper, PR Week asking for assignments. I was contacted by the Royal National Institute for the Blind. They wanted a media manager to accompany a blind (yes, blind!) ex-rally driver as he drove from John O' Groats to Lands End, with sponsorship from British Gas. Again, I'll tell you more. That little advertisement led me to moving in-house when I joined the original CrossRail project. They basically wanted someone who could write decent copy. My Public Relations background led me to taking the role of Media Relations manager. Stories by the bucket load there. It was time to set up my own company, and Real Public Relations was born. We operate from Cambridge and have developed an expertise in personal finance. We have spent 12 years working with Bacs as a client. If you pay anything by Direct Debit, that's Bacs. We work with young start ups as well as mature clients across a spread of sectors, but we are most known for our work in the Personal Finance, Law and Construction/Property. I suppose I'm part of that rare breed of critter, that actually loves what they do. Helping companies, large and small, realise their business ambitions gives me a huge sense of professional and personal satisfaction.
