About Stephen Hagen
Prof Stephen Hagen is a specialist in change management. He has held senior positions in universities and ed. Institutions, ranging from Academic Dean & PVC to Vice-Chancellor & Board Member - most recently he was elected Chair of Bath College Corp. Board. As an expert in educational entrepreneurship, he was the founding Director of Mercia Institute of Enterprise at Warwick University in 2001, professor and elected founding Chairman of the UK Science Enterprise Centres, comprising 10 Russell universities. Following Warwick Uni, he moved to UWE Bristol & founded RBI: Research, Business, Innovation. He was invited to be Deputy Chairman, Bristol Science City, but moved on to become DVC in Wales. In 2009 Prof Hagen was appointed DVC & in 2012 made Vice-Chancellor of the Univ. of Wales (Newport). As Member of the Joint Universities’ Board with Glamorgan University, he chaired the Delivery Group which merged both universities to form the new Uni of S. Wales in 2013. 2013-2025 Prof Hagen was appointed to senior interim management posts (PVC/Dean) in UK & abroad to provide solutions to the strategic challenges facing Higher Education; eg at ITMO in St Petersburg, EKTU, Univ. of Coventry, UWS & West London. Prof Hagen has worked extensively abroad, notably as Pro-Rector for Change Management & Internationalization at ITMO Univ, St Petersburg, where he was appointed to raise the University’s ranking from zero to 341+ in WUR. In 2015 Prof Hagen was appointed as a Consultant for the European Commission, after an open competition, to review the impact of Tempus on HE in Central Asia, later published by the EC in 2017. In 2018 he was appointed interim PVC (Strategy) at the Technical Univ. of East Kazakhstan and in 2018-2019, was appointed interim PVC at Sheffield Hallam Uni. In 2021-23 Prof Hagen was appointed Interim Dean at Coventry Uni where he headed up the Faculty of Engineering & later Nursing and Health. Prof Hagen has been awarded professorships at four UK universities. He is Prof. Emeritus of Multilingual Business Communication & speaks French, Russian & good German. Prof Hagen was awarded DUniv (h.c.); & holds an Hon. Fellowship, Institute of Linguists awarded 1996. His BA Hons & P/G degrees are from Durham & Newcastle Universities. His research citation is: h-index 15; i10index 17 He believes in equality of opportunity for all & comes from a family of leading anti-slavery activists & abolitionists: Jacob Hagen, Timber Merchant, St Saviour’s Wharf, London. Stephen was admitted to be a Freeman of the City of London in July 2024.
