About Stephen Holmes

Steve focuses his practice on commercial litigation and intellectual property litigation, with an emphasis on technology-related disputes. He is a registered patent attorney licensed to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office, and has over 20 years of experience litigating and resolving disputes in the US, the UK and Europe, including significant trial and appellate experience. Steve counsels clients across the whole range of IP rights, including patents, trade secrets, trademarks, copyright and designs, as well as in contractual, antitrust, employment and unfair competition matters, among others. He has examined trial witnesses, successfully argued motions for summary judgment, presented complex technologies at Markman hearings and technology tutorials, and has extensive case management and deposition experience. He has argued appeals before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Steve also has considerable experience with pre-litigation investigations, TRO and preliminary injunction procedures, arbitration and ADR proceedings, as well as patent and trademark proceedings at the USPTO and ITC proceedings. Prior to joining the Hansen Law Firm, Steve was an IP litigation partner at a leading international law firm and practiced for many years in Silicon Valley, including as Assistant General Counsel, Litigation, at an innovative Bay Area biotechnology company. Steve has represented clients in disputes covering a wide variety of industries and technologies, including: Internet advertising, computer software and hardware, hard disk drives, electronics, DNA analysis technology, tele-health systems, semiconductor equipment, vehicle technology, stock trading systems, wine and spirits brand protection, consumer products advertising, and sports equipment, among others. On a pro bono basis, Steve has represented and advised non-profit organizations and individuals in California and the UK. Steve is also a Chartered Professional Engineer in the UK.
