I have been a solicitor since 1985 - before which I had careers as a psychiatric nurse, a road sweeper and a lecturer in philosophy (at the University of Khartoum) I was the Head of Legal Services and Returning Officer at Bristol City Council for 16 years -bearing the responsibility for running local elections, european elections, general elections, mayoral elections and finally, in November 2012 the election of a Police and Crime Commissioner (with an electorate of over one million) As Head of Legal I had overall responsibility for the lawfulness of the council's decisions. I worked closely with councillors and had particular responsibility for governance and standards - with managerial responsibility for over 120 staff I worked as a consultant for Veale Wasbrough Vizards and specialised in Information Law, Public Law and elections until 2019. I work now as a consultant for the Tharthi Myay Foundation. This is a Myanmar based NGO which supports lawyers and CSOs working on land rights, gender violence and the rule of law. My role is to support the aspirations of Myanmar lawyers and Myanmar CSOs
