About Stephen Silides
My passion for teaching languages stems from a desire for students to meet and connect with people outside their linguistic and cultural sphere. As a Flagship Chinese alum, I know the importance of critical languages such as Chinese not only in our global economy, but on an interpersonal level as well. My motivation for achieving a high level of Chinese mastery wasn’t a desire to increase national security or an interest in the Chinese private sector. I started studying Chinese at boarding school aged thirteen with the hope of getting to know my dorm mates better. Once I had developed a strong language base, I found that not only could I better understand the Chinese speakers around me from a linguistic perspective, but that I could also better understand their worldviews and motivations. This was an intensely gratifying experience. There’s nothing I’d rather do as a profession than attempt to replicate that experience for other people.
