About Stephen Trowell

I have a zeal for solving real world problems with science, making sophisticated technologies not just easy but a pleasure to use. A former Principal Research Scientist with the CSIRO (the Australian Government's world-renowned research agency), I founded PPB Technology to accelerate quality and safety testing by food and beverage manufacturers. My unique contribution is the CYBERTONGUE® Technology. CYBERTONGUE® is a new and better way of testing for trace contaminants in food. Our technology is powered by ultrasensitive and specific protein-based biosensors and a state-of-the art device. This combination can perform a wide range of tests across different food and beverages, raw materials and ingredients, with minimal sample preparation. When I started PPB Tech, I was on my own. But, since 2021, we have grown internally and through our networks. We employ two Ph.D. researchers and an experienced office and logistics manager and we are now building our sales team. From the beginning of 2024, CYBERTONGUE® systems have been deployed with dairy processing customers in Australia and New Zealand. Our tests are breathtakingly easy to perform and provide our customers with the means to generate their own laboratory quality results on-site within minutes. Customers have told us this is the easiest and most user-friendly system they have worked with. I am extremely proud of the fact that our CYBERTONGUE® system recently won some of Australia's top design awards, including: • Best-in-Class, Medical and Scientific Equipment, Australian Good Design Awards, • Best-in-Class for Product Design, Victorian Premier’s Design Award • Best-in-Class, Technology Platform Solution, Australian Information Industry Assocation ACT PPB Technology markets the first practical solution to screen out raw milk containing high levels of AprX, a protease from Pseudomonas bacteria. This allows customers to improve the shelf-life of their UHT milk, avoid waste and clean up their milk supply chain. We have also developed superior solutions for trace lactose testing and alkaline phosphatase to help our existing customers in the dairy processing sector.
