About Stephen V. McGarity

As the Vice Chair of the University of Tennessee Institutional Review Board (IRB) and an Assistant Professor of Social Work, I oversee the ethical review of research involving human subjects and teach courses on research and social policy. I have more than twelve years of experience in conducting and disseminating research on disabilities, poverty, homelessness, social policy, non-profit management, and program evaluation. My mission is to advance social and economic justice for marginalized and oppressed populations through rigorous and relevant research and education. I have published multiple peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, presented at national and international conferences, and secured external funding for my research projects. I also collaborate with community partners, policymakers, and students to address the needs and challenges of people with disabilities and those experiencing poverty and homelessness. I am passionate about creating and sharing knowledge that can inform and improve social work practice and policy.
