About Steve Bonneau

Steve Bonneau is Senior Vice President and Senior Tax Counsel at The Northern Trust Company, Chicago, Illinois. Steve works closely with Northern Trust Partners, as well as with outside attorneys and accountants, advising on wealth transfer tax issues, particularly those involving the Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax. Steve reviews Federal Gift (and Generation-Skipping Transfer) Tax Returns prepared by Northern and collaborates with Northern’s Estate Settlement Services group when reviewing Schedule R of the Federal Estate (and Generation-Skipping Transfer) Tax Return. Steve reports taxable terminations and Qualified Severances with respect to trusts which Northern serves as fiduciary, in addition to notifying beneficiaries receiving taxable distributions. Steve is a lecturer for Northern’s Trust School, preparing Northern Partners for the Certified Trust and Fiduciary Advisor (CTFA) designation offered through the American Bankers Association. Prior to joining Northern Trust in 2013, Steve worked in private law practice for thirteen years and public accounting for two years. Steve earned his Bachelor of Arts in English from Boston College and his Juris Doctor from the University of Dayton School of Law. Steve currently serves as a member of the visiting adjunct faculty at The Heckerling Graduate Program in Estate Planning at The University of Miami School of Law, teaching Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax. Steve has previously been a member of the adjunct faculty of The John Marshall Law School, Center for Tax Law & Employee Benefits (now known as The University of Illinois-Chicago Law School) Steve is a former Chair of the Chicago Bar Association's Trust Law Committee and is a frequent speaker and writer on wealth transfer taxation.
