About Steve Brearton

Steve began work at Maclean’s magazine in 1990 and five years later chose to pursue a career as a freelance writer. Since then, he has been a contributing writer for The Globe and Mail, Report on Business magazine, Canadian Business, Toronto Life, Chatelaine, Cottage Life and Spacing magazine, among others, and has written columns, features and shorter items for many, many more consumer publications. Steve is particularly well known for developing, writing and coordinating complex, award-winning editorial packages, including Report on Business magazine’s annual Corporate Social Responsibility Ranking and 50 Best Employers features as well as Today’s Parent’s Best Cities to Live In. In 2013, he wrote the Top 50 Canadian Brands ranking for Report on Business magazine. He also specializes in integrating words with graphics and working with designers to create infographics. Steve won his first Canadian National Magazine Award in 1996 – a Silver award of excellence for a Toronto Life feature on bike couriers - and has since been nominated on 12 more occasions, winning three Gold awards in 2003, 2007 and 2015. His work has also won a Canadian Business Media Award and the White Medal for Writing from the U.S. City and Regional Magazine Competition. He supplements his magazine work with corporate writing and has written annual reports for Evergreen, The Stop Community Food Centre and The Kensington Health Centre.
