About Steve Cooper

Being able to use my degree in economics was an early desire but the education had only begun as I started out as a broker for an old-line brokerage firm, Thomson McKinnon. The dramatically changing market cycles of the last 35 years have demonstrated how markets can be dynamic, treacherous, rewarding, counter-intuitive and, on rare occasion, even boring. Very early on, my goal was to understand the macro-economic conditions that drove markets, economic cycles and their profound impact on investment portfolios. The bottom line is that no one can know in advance where the economy is headed or exactly where we are in the business cycle. Emotion is the enemy. Objective, common-sense rules are the solution. The understanding that is lost on the great majority of investors is that a good defense wins, over a market cycle. Every investor will be wrong at some point in their investing career. Quickly recognizing mistakes and limiting the damage are the common traits among the most successful investors in the world. Being truly objective, employing a rules-based strategy can be challenging in a world where a cross current of information is delivered daily through a fire hose. I began managing money in 1989 and my real joy is my ability to communicate and employ for clients a different and more common- sense set of rules that are tried and true.
