The Center for Access and Achievement (CA2) at Maryville University focuses on talent development and STEM education serving pk-12th grade students from underrepresented populations and their teachers. It's vital that all children, regardless of family income, race, or gender have access to innovative education and are on a pathway to college. CA2 programs include- LEGO Foundation Play to Learn playground-focused math curriculum development - Integrating AI with Smart Engineering and ELA NSF grant subaward with Tufts University)- The Science and Robotics Program serving over 500 students ages 4-16 years annually - The STEM Education Certificate Program for teachers - First Bank Virtual Teaching Academy and Educational Technology Academy for teachers - FutureSTL STEM Champion teachers (Boeing grant)- STEM Explorations for 350 elementary students annually (Emerson grant)- Coding Camp for 250 secondary students to learn coding annually (Emerson grant)- STEM Solvers robotics-ELA curriculum development (Bayer Fund grant)- STEM Creators with the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center of East St. Louis, coding with real world products (Regions Bank grant) Select Past Programs with lasting impact- The Maryville Young Scholars program helped change state policy to increase diversity in gifted education (Emerson, Saigh Foundation, and Dana Brown Charitable Trust grants)-STEM Sprouts early childhood STEM serves as a regional model for STEM in early childhood education - Children using Robotics for Engineering, Science, Technology, and Math (CREST-M) curriculum development project (Monsanto Fund grant)- Cyber Ready St. Louis, created cybersecurity curriculum for high schools now freely available online (Bayer Fund grant) I conduct research on developing STEM talents and am author of more than 50 publications and 100 presentations on these topics, including the book Serving Visual-Spatial Learners. My interests include engaging underrepresented populations in STEM, robotics, ed tech, problem and project-based learning, spatial ability, math, giftedness, and creativity. I was the 2010 recipient of the Joyce VanTassel-Baska Award for Excellence in Gifted Education and the 2020 Laura Joyner Award recipient from the Mensa Foundation.
