Background
About Steve Everley
Closing in on 47 years in the petroleum industry specializing in the liquid petroleum custody transfer measurement segment as a tank strapper, meter prover, waterdraw technician, meter prover and metering skid designer, inside sales, outside sales, middle management, and even a fancy title of VP of Sales & Marketing, I find I still enjoy meeting new people and hopefully helping them succeed in whatever their goals may be. As I continue to collect birthdays and years of industry experience, I am reminded of those who have been mentors and influencers in my life and on my career. If not for those many, many special people who took an interest in me, or in some cases a chance, I certainly would not be where I am today. I truly believe that many of those were God given and directed to act or speak at just the right time with just the right words or actions. I wish I could thank each one of them in person. I'm thankful to one mentor who told me a long time ago "you're going to have to work for a living, so you better find something you like to do and go do it". For the most part, that has proven to be dead on. I have found that choices you make in life always have consequences and sometimes you get lemons instead of lemonade. In my career, I have been blessed to work for some of the best (and worst) people and companies. I've met hundreds if not thousands of people and have learned that being kind and having a confident humility is always the better approach to making friends and influencing others. So here is some free advice for anyone who cares to hear; lower your expectations and raise your commitment, doing so will pay dividends. In sales (and in life) listen first, think before speaking and always ask for the order. In other words, don't be afraid to ask for whatever it is you want. The worst that can happen is you'll be told "no", and you can always learn something from that experience. Volunteer for something. Doing so will make you step out of your comfort zone, and you'll find that giving is truly better than receiving. And lastly, a bad day of fishing always trumps a day of work. Cheers!
