Specialist expertise in tribology (friction, wear and lifetime performance) and materials science & technology, including applications of coatings & surface treatments. I find it fascinating to put science into practice, having 35+ years experience in both industrial and academic research and development, with wide-ranging application experience in medical, home healthcare and personal care device development, consumer electronics, semiconductors and manufacturing. R&D specialist and leadership at Philips, and as Steve Franklin Consultancy, at companies such as ASML, Johnson & Johnson, VDL and ThermoFisher Scientific. I have also led a research group at ARCNL (Advanced Research Center in NanoLithography), have a large industrial and university network, and am part-time honorary Visiting Professor in Tribology at the University of Sheffield (UK) and visiting scientist at the University of Amsterdam (NL). Ph.D. in Metallurgy/Materials Technology, B.Sc. 1st class hons. in Applied Physics & Materials Science. Skills in industry-academic bridge-forming, translation of business needs to research questions, mentoring of junior and senior R&D staff, leadership of professionals, R&D coordination, project leadership, research proposals, technical coaching, training & lecturing, expert witness, technical editing of publications. 60+ scientific journal publications, 17+ patents.
